Yacht Charter Soller

On a Soller yacht charter with Borrow a Boat you can explore much of Mallorca and the Balearic Islands which are within an easy sail. Whatever you want from an Mallorca yacht charter, from its beautiful beaches to its fantastic culture, a Soller sailing holiday is going to be an unforgettable experience.

Nestled at the foot of the Tramuntana Mountains, Soller was so isolated even the Romans didn't bother conquering it when they took Mallorca into the empire. It didn't really start trading with the rest of the island until the early 1900s when a trainline was built between it and Palma! That said, there is evidence of human habitation dating back 5,000 years, with bronze statues from the area dating back to that time.

Soller and the coastal Puerto de Soller made their money in the 1700s and 1800s growing and exporting oranges and olives for trade with France. You will see beautiful mansions around the towns as well as religious buildings funded by the same wealth. Piracy was a problem for many years - in one case the town fought off an invasion of 1600 pirates, and this is commemorated in an annual festival, one of many Puerto de Soller holds every year.

Though daytrippers come by the steam train to admire the journey getting there, thanks to its position in the Tramuntana Mountains the town has become a major draw to those who want to explore the mountains. There are very well marked hiking routes, and road cyclists are attracted to the pass beneath the peak of the highest mountain in the Balearic Islands, Puig Major. Do pay a visit to the arty village of Deia high in the mountains too - a worthy trip to get a feel for a laid back Mallorcan village.

For the sailor, thanks to the difficult coastline Puerto Soller is the only port on the west coast of Mallorca. There is a decent sized marina here that is well protected from the winds and seas. So what else is there to see on a Soller yacht charter? Read on to find out more!

Explore Soller By Renting A Yacht

On a Mallorca yacht charter out of Soller you can explore the coastline of the biggest island in the Balearics or do a bit of island hopping. As we said above, Puerto Soller is the only port on the west coast between Port d'Andratx at the SW tip and Puerto Pollenca on the NW tip.

Majorca has a lot to offer and is moving away from its cheap holiday image as more attractions are recognised and invested in. You can go hiking in Mondrago National Park, and enjoy a bit of the 14km long Alcudia sandy beach all to yourself.

White sandy 'cala' beaches are one of the biggest draws to Majorca, and on your sailing holiday you will be able to get to a sandy beach or two that can't be accessed from shore. Cala d'Or, close to Portocolom on the SE coast of Mallorca is in direct translation 'the Golden Bay' - a yachty heaven of golden beaches and great natural wealth. Far more relaxed and family oriented, it is worthy of an afternoon's enjoyment as you explore the island.

Around 20 nautical miles from Soller by sea is the upmarket Port Andratx, where you will find large luxury yachts and their owners' holiday homes perched both close to the port itself and inland around Andratx. This hasn't many beaches but the in-crowd have enough to entertain them here!

To the east of Andratx is the capital of the Balearic Island group, Palma de Mallorca. This is a cosmopolitan city that many say is at least as good as Barcelona with its sophisticated style, great shopping and top end restaurants.

Just to the SW of Mallorca is the Cabrera Island archipelago. This can be accessed with a permit only, but is worthy of a day charter boat trip if you can get aboard a tourist boat thanks to this protected national park being so beautiful.

Less than a day's sail away to the west from Palma is the hippy island of Ibiza and neigbouring Formentera with your choice of secluded coves, riotous partying and beautiful beaches and an alternative culture that rivals Glastonbury or San Francisco. Out to the northeast from Puerto Pollenca you can explore Menorca that has much the same on offer as Majorca but in microcosm.

How To Get To Soller

Palma Airport

With two million passengers passing through the airport every year, Palma Airport is one of the busiest on the Mediterranean Sea.

If you can time it right, you can take a twice daily train to Soller from Palma. Taking an hour to cover the 27km route it passes through the mountains and has some quite spectacular views. And yes, the train itself is over 100 years old!

The alternative is to take a bus from the airport into Palma and switching to a second bus to Soller. This also takes about an hour. It takes half an hour by taxi.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Soller

On your bareboat or luxury yacht charter yacht you can explore Mallorca and Menorca. Let's look at a sample charter itinerary.

6 days - Majorca and Menorca: The first shakedown cruise will be out of Puerto Soller to the next family holiday resort, Port de Pollenca on the north coast. The next day is a longer trip - NE to old town of Cieutadella on Menorca. See the important ex Royal Navy port of Mahon on the SE of the island as a next stop, and then get ready for a long leg down to the yachting paradise of Cala d'Or on Mallorca the next. Port d'Andratx will be your next evening - many argue the most beautiful town in the Balearic Island group. Back to Puerto Soller for handover.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Soller

The sailing season in the Balearic Islands is best from May to October. The major party towns heat up to full frenzy in June to August, and so do the prices. It is very much down to what you want from a sailing holiday in the islands - if partying all night is on the cards, the top DJs will hit the region in that time and you will have quite a memorable time. If the quiet life is what you seek, then do try to get out during term time - the sea is still warm in September and October, though the infamous Tramontana starts to be more frequent at this time of year, as it eases off in early May.

Sailing Weather In Soller

The NE breeze common to coastal Mediterranean France dominates Majorca, a cool relief from the summer heat. It never really gets above 17 knots or so so there will be some boisterous sailing but never more than is fun. You will see more precipitation towards the beginning and end of the sailing season (May and October) but the temperatures rarely stray below 15-17 degrees during those times. In the height of summer (July/August) it isn't as hot as mainland Spain, though you will see the odd few days in the 30+ C range. For Northern Europeans and those from other cooler climes this makes for fantastic sailing!
