Yacht Charter Fethiye

The popular Turkish coast resort of Fethiye has been inhabited in some form for at least the last 2,400 years. A great jumping off point for a Fethiye yacht charter, the town is worthy of a day's visit in its own right.

Many people on a sailing vacation visit Fethiye for its ancient ruins - the ancient city of Telmessos under the foundations of Fethiye has rock tombs and a theatre dating back to at least the 4th Century BC. Though little is known of the Lycians (who left little if any written history) the Lycian town was occupied by the Romans who modified the theatre, which was in use until the 7th Century AD.

Today you will find the Turquoise Coast town a buzzing little vacation resort.

Amongst other things you should try:

  • The Tuesday market where you can buy almost anything you can imagine from rugs to pots and fresh food
  • The Old Town where you can do much of the same shopping every day of the week
  • Climb to the Lycian tombs on the hill above the town
  • Visit one of a large number of beautiful beaches - some only accessible by sea
  • Go island hopping on Fethiye Bay
  • Walk the Fethiye Peninsula (bring water as it gets hot!)

Whether you're interested in the worlds of the old or the new, you will remember Fethiye for the very best that a Turkish yacht charter has on offer.

Explore Fethiye By Renting A Yacht

Whether on a blue cruise or a bareboat yacht charter you are spoiled for choice on a Fethiye yacht charter. The Turkish Riviera has ancient ruins, modern vacation resorts and restaurants with their own piers for you to spend the night alongside.

Fethiye Bay has a small archipelago of inhabited and uninhabited islands that could be worth a week's gentle island hopping, whether looking for quiet fishing villages, ancient shipyards or just a bay for you to anchor in, completely alone.

Nearby Olu Deniz is famous for its beaches. Whether Butterfly Beach (that can only be accessed by sea), famous for its winged inhabitants, or the tourist center of Belcekiz Beach, you have a choice of beaches that will appeal to every taste.

For those after a bit of a cosmopolitan fix Marmaris is a couple of days sailing away, with its bars, restaurants and marina right in the center of town. If nature is more your thing, Marmaris also caters to that with its nearby national park.

Within a few days sail in the other direction down the Turquoise Coast you can see Turkey at full throttle in the modern city of Antalya with its Old Town showing life of old yet its modern outer town rivalling many a Mediterranean city for its vibrance.

Between both? You can enjoy one-restaurant-bays, quiet anchorages and quaint fishing villages. The marine life is quite something too - the sea is so clear you never know what you might see on your yacht charter vacation!

Suggested Sailing Routes From Fethiye

Whether on a gulet vacation or bareboat yacht charter, on a yacht charter vacation out of Fethiye you are spoiled forn choice as to where you can go! Here are two possible sailing itineraries to give you an idea as to what is on offer.

7 days - Island hopping Fethiye Bay: Taking in the historic towns of Fethiye and Gocek, this is an opportunity to see the best that the Gulf of Fethiye has to offer. The Gulf has a number of islands (that belong to Turkey unlike many islands close-by) such as Tersane ('Dockyard Island'), Baba Island (famed for its wild rabbits), and the archaeologically important Kekova Island. Gemiler Island has ancient Christian ruins and is known for its links to St Nicholas. On this trip you will get the opportunity to forget the world outside while enjoying the beauty of the bay in its entirety.

14 days - the best of the Turquoise Coast: This trip starts with an easterly trip out towards Kekova Roads and its quiet anchorages. You will spend an afternoon in Butterfly Bay, named for its beautiful insect residents. Heading west, pausing at anchorages and villages on the way you will get to the buzzing vacation resort of Marmaris. Do stop at Wall Bay and Ruins Bay where you will get to see ancient ruins from early Christian and Roman times. Tomb Bay is another place of important archaelogical interest (the remains of the Carian city of Cyra is here). A final stop on the way back to Fethiye will be Gocek with its four marinas and great sailor's buzz!

Best Times To Rent A Yacht In Fethiye

The sailing season runs from April to October in Fethiye. July and August are the busiest months for a Fethiye yacht charter. This is also when the NE wind the Meltemi peaks in strength. Though this makes for a cooling blast from the fierce heat of summer.

With the Meltemi less powerful outside of the peak season - and the marinas and sailing waters less crowded - it may pay off to do a sailing vacation either later in the year or earlier - if you can get out in May or October you may find things calmer both in terms of crowds.

Sailing Weather In Fethiye

The Meltemi winds dominate the weather of the Aegean Sea in Turkey. The further west you go - as far as Bodrum the stronger the NW winds are during the day. The further east you go - around Antalya in the east of the country, the gentler these winds are during the day. These vary day to day and through the day. The most comfortable time to sail in Turkey is during the morning every day during the vacation season. The winds tend to be lighter and steadier in the morning and can build to very exciting conditions come mid-afternoon.

Frequently asked questions
What should I consider when renting a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a captain, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

What are the Marinas in Fethiye?

You will typically pay 50% up front on reservation the yacht rent and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

What should I think of before I rent a Yacht or Boat in Fethiye?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like.
