Yacht Charter Nafplion

On a Nafplion yacht charter with Borrow a Boat you can explore the Argolic Gulf and Saronic Gulf of the Peloponnese within an easy sail. Whatever you want from a Peloponnese yacht charter, whether it's from its legendary cuisine, its beaches, culture or deep human history, a Nafplio sailing holiday is going to be an unforgettable experience.

On the west coast of the Argolic Gulf, Nafplio is dominated by three forts. Right above the town and seemingly floating on the ridge is the Palamidi Fortress. According to legend there are 999 steps to it - in fact, just 857 but still a stiff climb! Just out to sea is the Bourtzi fort that you can access by small boat. Next to Palamidi is the Acronafplia fort that was originally built in the Iron Age but has been adapted through the millennia. Nafplion has been an important settlement for thousands of years - short trips from the town can take you to settlements and forts dating back thousands of years.

From fun taverna to cafes, shops, sandy beach and of course just taking in the view, Nafplio has something for almost everyone. If not on a yachting holiday, you could enjoy wandering its streets and nearby villages without needing to explore much further afield. From the ancient ruins to the lively bars and restaurants, you will find something to enjoy every day.

The mid-sized marina is a great place to start your Nafplion yacht charter. Shall we see what else there is in this part of the eastern Peloponnese on your charter yacht? Read on to find out!

Explore Nafplio By Renting A Yacht

The Peloponnese is effectively an island if you count the Corinth Canal across the ithsmus that links it to the mainland. Ruled over by Sparta for many years, it was the location for battles between the Athenians and Spartans, and over the centuries the Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans have ruled over it.

Just outside of Nafplion is the Mycenaean fort of Tiryns, with its underground passages that will send you back in time as you wander them. Though not as popular as nearby Mykines, it could be the better bet simply because it doesn't have so many visitors!

You will see traces of different empires and civilsations all over the peninsula. For those on a yacht charter, the amphitheatre of Epidavros is a couple of days sail from Nafplio but definitely worth a visit.

Your bareboat charter holiday or superyacht sailing holiday can take you to the different ancient ruins but can also take you island hopping. Spetses Island is a short sail from Porto Cheli but over a couple of easy days sailing you can get to the Saronic Islands of Poros and Aegina with their distinct subcultures and ecology.

As well as the excellent sailing to be found on the Aegean Sea, you will find many a secluded cove in which to drop anchor, perhaps eating the fish you have caught with your lines as you cruise along the coast and islands. Thanks to its excellent location, Nafplio can enable you to enjoy the best of the Peloponnese - and this, many agree, is the best of mainland Greece.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Nafplion

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charters. Ironically, July and August can be the worst times to sail! Both the extremely hot air temperatures and the often hazardous Meltemi winds, it can make for big winds sailing when you honestly just want to hide from the heat.

At the beginning of the sailing season, the sea is much cooler, with the chances of rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see the green fields and flowers in May, and the winds can be quite benign too. With smaller crowds and calmer weather, May to early June are a sweet spot for a Peloponnese yacht charter.

Come September and October, sea temperatures are ideal, having soaked up the seasons sun to end the season on high. However, with the likely chances of water shortages on the islands, the land isn't quite as green as the early season, with wildlife looking slightly more parched.

Sailing Weather In Nafplion

April to mid June: Early in the season rainfall is not uncommon, and the temperatures begin to build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degrees celcius range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, however, these are replaced by ever stronger N-NW Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat! Temperatures average anything from 30 degrees, with recent hot days exceeding 40 in the prime of summer. The northerly Meltemi winds can be fierce and can hit F7 for a solid few days.

September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sail as the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid 20s.

FAQs:

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider when deciding on a yacht charter are; One, what is your budget? This will help to narrow down what sort of charter it is that you are after. Two, if you're interested in a bareboat charter, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat ? If not if you would require a skipper, or more, a hostess? Three, whom you are taking sailing? And lastly, four, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip? These few questions will all help to shape the perfect charter to suit your individual needs.

What is the main Marina in Nafplio?

Marina Nafplio is where most charters embark from. With 210 berths, Marina Nafplio can take yachts and superyachts of up to 25m LOA.

When are the best times to hire a boat in Nafplio?

May to June are the best times of year to go on a sailing vacation out of the Peloponnese thanks to the comfortable heat and gentler sailing conditions. Most islands have water supplies too. July and August are fiercely hot and the Meltemi winds can be fierce, but even so are the most popular months for a boat rental in Greece.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Nafplio?

When booking a charter you will typically pay 50% up front, and the balance in the month before your departure. At base you will often have some additional extras to pay upfront, including a security deposit with your credit card . You can also organise insurance, which would cover any potential damage, in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF channel 16, or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to, or are on a mooring, you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

Once you have decided on which yacht you are interested in chartering, you should then consider what the next steps may be. One what it is you need to bring with you, whether it be warmer clothes for cooler weather, bearing in mind the potential winds on board. As well as this, how you plan on getting to the yacht, how you plan to provision the yacht and finally what you hope to do on board. Planning this before you go can maximise your experience on board.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a boat or yacht?
