Lavrion is a port town on the eastern tip of the Attika Peninsula, and is undergiong a renaissance thanks to tourism after years of decline as a silver mining town.

The area around Lavrion has long been celebrated for its mineral wealth. The Athenians mined the area for silver and out of Lavrion Port naval forces financed by the silver went onto dominate the region. The stone used in the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion were dug from the area too.

Today those interested in minerals flock to Lavrion thanks to the geology and unique crystals that wash up on the sandy beach in storms. There is even a museum devoted to the mineral wealth of the area. Others less educated may wish to visit the giant hole in the ground that is 61 meters deep and has no explanation for its existence.

Thanks to its location on the Aegean Sea, a Lavrion yacht charter could be in a number of different directions, whether Greek island hopping or exploring the coast. Less than an hour by ferry away is Kea Island, the closest island of the Cyclades to the mainland. Athens Airport

Athens Airport is a major international airport with over 80 airlines landing there. There are direct buses to Lavrion Marina that cost around $11 per head, taxis cost around $50.

Marinas In Lavrion

Two of Greece's main charter yacht marinas are just an hour or so apart, both close to Athens. Lavrion Marina is the one in Lavrion but Alimos Marina is just a few hours down the coast. 7 days - Saronic Islands and the Peloponnese: Roughly south west of Lavrion are the major Saronic Islands of Poros, Aegina and Agistri. With their laid back and quaint culture they are a major draw in their own right. Beyond and are the Peloponnese peninsula with its nearby islands of Kithra, Doka and Idra. After coast and island hopping, head back across the Gulf to Lavrion.

7 days - Olympic Marina - Southern Cyclades: Kea is just a short hop from Laviron and can be done the evening you board the boat. There are a number of safe marinas and anchorages there so don't worry about being late. Mykonos is one of the best known Greek islands - do visit Little Venice where the sea goes right up to the buildings' walls. Loutra in Kynthos has hot medicinal springs and great coves for sea swimming.

14 days - Laviron to Santorini: The volcanic island of Santorini is one of the most famous sights in Greece short of the Acropolis. Heading out through the southern Cyclades islands including Paros, Mykonos and Aegean jewel of Ios, you will arrive in Santorini before turning west towards Folegandros, Serifos and Kynthos before returning to port.

Best Times To Rent A Yacht In Lavrion

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter.

The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for a Lavrion yacht charter.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath. However there are often water shortages on the islands and everything looks parched.

April to mid June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, though these are replaced by ever stronger N-NW Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat and temperatures are from 30s.

September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sail as the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid 20s.
