The small yet perfectly formed Mediterranean village beach resort of Pirovac lies nestled in a deep bay on the Croatian coast, close to Sibenik.

Though first listed in 1298, then named Zlosela, its history hasn't exactly rocked the world. It hasn't grown much over the last seven centuries either - from 68 residents in seven houses in 1298 it now has 1,600 residents.

Renamed Pirovac in 1921, the village now relies heavily on the tourism and yach rental trade. The beautiful beaches and 10km deep Pirovac Bay, as well as the locally named 'Love Island' make for a great hidey-hole from both heavy weather and the busy world outside.

Makirina Cove is a must-see, with its warm mud that is reputed to have great health qualities, who says you need to have good, clean fun to have a good time.

For those after a bit of history, Croatia's oldest city of Sibenik is just 24km away with its historic old town.

Explore Pirovac By Renting A Yacht

For those on a Pirovac yacht charter, you have a choice of decent nightlife, a taste of history and culture, to hide away in the natural beauty of this area, or a mix of all three on your sailing trip.

Sibenik, 24km away, has evidence of Roman and pre-historic habitation. Its Old Town is an important part of the country's history to include war with the Ottoman Empire and benevolent Venetian occupation. Zadar is 48km to the north and will appeal to those after a culture fix during their sailing trip.

If you and your crew like nightlife, there are a couple of good nightclubs locally and these can be combined with a sailing vacation that includes the beach resorts of Biograd na Moru to the north and a visit to Primosten to the south which has world-famous dance DJs regularly at its nightclub.

For those who want to get lost in nature, you're utterly spoiled. The Vransko Jezero lake is just 5km away, and around 30km away (a day's sail) you can get to Skradin and the Krka National Park. Offshore with a day or two's sailing beyond Murter you will encounter the Kornati Islands and their national park.

How To Get To Pirovac

Zadar Airport

Around 50km from Pirovac, Zadar Airport is the closer of the two international airports to the village. Served by many European airlines during the summer, it is closed to international airlines in the winter months.

It will involve a bus ride of around two hours via Zadar Bus Station, which will be roughly $5 per passenger simply take a taxi.

Split Airport

This has more airlines serving it from more countries than Zadar but is just over 85km (50 miles) from Pirovac.

To get to Pirovac you will take an airport shuttle to Trogir and then an onward bus to the village. This will cost around $7 per person all in and is roughly 3 hours from the airport or there are plenty of taxis that can make the journey.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Pirovac

Nestled between Sibenik and Zadar on the Adriatic Sea, there is a lot to see and do within a fairly short sailing distance of Pirovac. Trogir and Split are well within a seven-day circuit, though if you're into island hopping you have the Dalmatian Archipelago, the Zadar Archipelago and Sibenik Archipelago within easy sailing range. Here are some ideas as to where you can visit on a sailing boat, catamaran or motor yacht.

7 days - PIrovac to Trogir return: The destination town of Trogir has a stunning Old Town that has survived wars through the ages. You can sail down the coast via Murter, Sibenik, Primosten and Rogoznica before returning north via the Dalmatian and Sibenik islands, pausing at the Kornati Islands on your return.

7 days - Island Hopping Pirovac to Zadar return: On this route again you can sail up the coastline to Zadar, stopping at Murter, Biograd, and Sukosan before island hopping through the Zadar archipelago and Sibenik archipelago as you head for the home port.

14 days - Cres and Losinj island hopping: Heading up to the northern Adriatic you will take in destinations such as Biograd and Zadar before entering the Kvarner Archipelago and with the twin islands of Cres and Losinj. These islands were the same island until it is believed the Romans cut a 10-metre wide channel for its vessels to take a shortcut. Head south through the Zadar and Sibenik archipelagos, exploring the beautiful islands and islets as you go.

Best Times To Rent A Yacht In Pirovac

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. The ACI Marina chain also adds 20% to their berthing fees at this time of year. If you can charter outside of the peak period you will find it quieter and less expensive.

Sailing Weather In Pirovac

April and May: There will be occasional rainy days but temperatures sit between 22-28C or higher. Winds are generally north west, 10-20 knots

June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat! Temperatures are from 26C and up to the mid 30s. Wind is generally north west 5-10 knots

September-October: In this part of the world it rains more in October and the temperature falls away to 10 degrees C in the evenings, though it can get up to a comfortable 20C on an autumn day. Winds can get up to 20 knots.
