Yacht Charter Naples

## Guide To Sailing In Naples

On a Naples yacht charter with Borrow a Boat you can explore the Bay of Naples, Phlegraean Islands and Amalfi Coast within an easy sail. Whatever you want from an Italian yacht charter, from enjoying the vibrant culture and beautiful coast to its beautiful beaches, a Naples sailing holiday is going to be an unforgettable experience.

Overlooked by Mount Vesuvius, Naples and its bay sits in spectacular scenery with the coastline and islands something that needs to be seen to fully appreciate. Travelling around the city you may wish to take a funicular railway to get from the old city centre near the university up to Vomero, a beautiful neighbourhood with vistas of the sea and the city as a whole.

Down towards the coast, the old town has monuments and buildings reflecting Napoli's illustrious past and deep history. Here you will find tight alleys and plazas with all sorts of hidden jewels. This forms part of what is the largest UNESCO World Heritage Site in Europe.

You will be familiar with a number of Neapolitan foods that have become common in Western countries. Pizzas, good coffee, ragu and pasta with beans have become so ensconced in other cultures it is hard to believe that they may have been exported from one city in Southern Italy! Those after a good and reasonably priced feed on their visit to the city will not be disappointed, though you will find all of the above made made in the old ways using family recipes.

Moving towards the coast, and the eight marinas along the city's coast, you will end up in Chiaia, a relaxed, middle class neightbourhood with excellent beaches. Walk the waterfront, enjoy a coffee (or something stronger in the evening) and catch the vibe of this world famous city before beginning your Naples yacht charter.

So what else can you and your fellow charter guests do on your Southern Italy yacht charter cruise with Borrow a Boat? Read on to find out more!

## Explore Naples By Renting A Yacht

Where else can you go on your Southern Italy yacht charter? As a charter destination there is a heady mix of buzzing holiday resorts and quiet, relaxed places to forget the world.

To the south of Naples is Mount Vesuvius and the well preserved remains of Pompeii that fell victim to its explosion 2,000 years ago. This is a must-visit on your trip around the Gulf of Naples.

South again and you reach the Sorrento Peninsula. The northern coast is quieter and very relaxed with towns like Sorrento and the beautiful coastline well worth taking in.

Around the coastline to the south of Sorrento is the popular Amalfi Coast. Some 13 towns cling to the mountainsides with a challenging road connecting them. It is actually easier to get between them by sea - and often quicker! Sailing on the Tyrrhenian Sea between these wonderful towns on your charter yacht you can fully appreciate the beauty of the area that has drawn artists and writers for well over a century. On your boat trip you can go on runs ashore along the Amalfi coastline to fashionable restaurants, boutiques and cafes to drink in the atmosphere, wines and world famous cuisine.

As well as the mainland, there are a number of islands that you should visit too. Capri Island to the west of the Sorrento Peninsula is perhaps the most famous and fashionable with its awesome sea stacks and caves, as well as its fashionable resorts (that are better by night than day). To the east and just south of Positano are the Li Galli islands - private now, but source of the legend of the Sirens, that called sailors to their deaths on the treacherous rocks.

To the north of Capri island are the far quieter, though equally attractive Phlegraean Islands. Centred on the largest island of Ischia, these are volcanic islands where you can enjoy the hot and cold springs and national parks. Ischia and Procida both market themselves on wellness tourism, and you will find many a spa and wellness resort on the four islands. The Pontine Islands are further north again and much quieter still.

On a longer yacht charter holiday you could even get as far as the Aeolian Islands off Sicily. These volcanic outcrops include the ever raging Stromboli that gives the ultimate firework display every night. On the Aeolian Islandof Vulcano you can come ashore and enjoy the hot springs and mud baths - ideal for easing out the knots of your muscles from a boisterous sail across the Tyrrhenian Sea!

For your Naples yacht charter, you need to know a few things about getting there and the marinas - read on to find out more.

## Suggested Sailing Routes From Napoli

Whether on a sailing boat or motor boat on a bareboat charter or private yacht charter you can explore the Bay of Naples, Amalfi Coast and southwestern Italy on your charter yacht. A longer trip can take you to the volcanic Aeolian Islands and Sicily too. Let's take a look at two such routes.

**7 Days - Sorrentine Peninsula and Islands of the Gulf of Naples**: Leaving Naples, head south to Sorrento on the Sorrentine Peninsula, perhaps mooring in Marina Piccola in the city. East and round to the Amalfi Coast where you can take in the spectacular scenery and great resort towns perched on the cliffs for a couple of days. East again and off to Capri for a day and night before crossing the Gulf of Naples to the Phlegraean Islands of Ischia and Procida. Back to your charter base for handover.

**14 days - Sicily and Southern Italy:** Over two weeks you can head down to the 'boot toe' of Italy, taking in the best of Southern Italy as you go. Cruising down the coast to Sicily you can take in towns and cities like Marina Camerota, Tortora Marina, and Tropea on mainland Italy and Messina on Sicily before hitting Sicily's north coast. Milazzo on the north coast is a must stop, and then perhaps explore further west to Palermo for another cosmopolitan fix. East to Cabo d'Orlando, and then out to the Aeolian Island group. Stop at Vulcano and moor off Stromboli before the longest leg of all - around 100NM north across the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Sorrentine Peninsula and back to the charter base.

## Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Naples

The sailing season in Italy is from May to October. Outside of the high season in July/August you will find many marinas have enough room to meet demand and will often be cheaper than Greece or Croatia.

In some parts of Italy's sailing meccas the prices rocket in July/August and you may end up paying hundreds of Euros for the last available berth if you're lucky enough to get one!

As such the best times to sail in Italy are during school term in September or October when the sea is still warm but the marinas and towns relaxed and quiet. If you want Italy at full throttle in the maximum heat of summer the high season may well be for you!

## The Climate

During much of the sailing season on the west Mediterranean you will find sea breezes that build during the day and ease off at night, making for a perfect sailing holiday.

The hot, humid southerly Scirocco can make things extremely uncomfortable at night in southern Italy and around Sicily from time to time. Expect temperatures to hardly dip at night from the high 30s in the day. Orange hued fog (coloured by Sahara Desert sand) is another issue, adding to the discomfort!

In July and August however, many of the winds seem to take a rest for the year. You could end up motoring for much of your sailing holiday!

## FAQs:

### What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

### **What are the Marinas in Naples?**

There are seven marinas in metropolitan Naples. The three largest are Marina Vigliena (800 berths, max LOA 80m), Ormeggio Sena Napoli (600 berths max LOA 30m) and Porto de Mergellina (400 berths, 75m LOA).

### When are the best times to hire a boat in Napoli?

While the sailing season runs from April to October in the region, it can get very busy and hot at the peak times of July and August with the marinas often very full and expensive. As such if you can get on a sailing vacation outside the school holidays, perhaps in May or September the sailing conditions are better and the crowds are less intense.

### Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Naples?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

### What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

### What should I think of before I hire a Yacht or Boat in Naples?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Dress for warm weather but do have something for tropical rains - light but waterproof.

### What Qualifications Do I need to hire a boat or yacht?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a crewed yacht charter you typically don't require licences.
