Catamaran Charter Seychelles

Whether aboard a large luxury yacht charter with crew looking after your every need, or a bareboat charter sailing yacht, a catamaran charter Seychelles will allow you to enjoy the best of these Indian Ocean paradise islands.

Whether on a bareboat charter in the Inner Islands or a luxury yacht charter out to the Outer Islands, a Seychelles yacht charter could mean a variety of things, from the excellent beaches, to snorkelling over pristine coral reefs or meeting giant tortoises who were around before your great-grandmother was born!

Inner Islands

After landing at Seychelles International Airport on Mahé Island, you will likely start your sailing holiday at either Eden Island Marina on Mahé or take a ferry over to Praslin Marina on nearby Praslin Island. From here you can take your charter yacht off to explore some of the best beaches in the world and enjoy your sailing holiday in this Indian Ocean paradise.

Mahé Island has the capital Port Victoria, which might be considered a village in some parts of the world for its size. Even so it is a riot of cultures thanks to the colonial past of the country. If a taste of Creole culture suits, do have a wander around the town - it is most enjoyable when not seriously chilling on a faraway beach!

Mahé is home to one of the highest mountains on the Inner Islands too - climb up Morne Seychellois to get the astounding views from 900 metres up, having enjoyed the mountain rainforest as you climb.

Whether based on Praslin Island or sailing from Mahé, you should head 7 miles NW from its capital St Anne to the renowned Anse Lazio beach. This is widely held as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, though as ever now the word is out, it can be a little crowded for it. Anse Lazio is not as developed as those you will find in the British Virgin Islands or a Croatia yacht charter for example, but it has some nice restaurants nearby to get a break from the serious job of chilling!

On your charter Seychelles you may want to be a little more active. Not far from Mahé Island is the smaller Inner Island of St Anne. St Anne Island Marine National Park is heavily protected - fishing is banned - and this means you can enjoy snorkelling on its world class coral reef and enjoy its top end beaches.

Another small Inner Island is Curieuse, home to a tortoise nursery. You as well as meeting the older residents of the island, it has a number of nature trails to explore. Head to the Baie Laraie, which is home to six of the seven endemic mangrove species in the Seychelles. There is a raised board walk through the mangrove swamp at Baie Laraie you can explore - a little different to what you'd expect elsewhere here!

Other smaller islands in the Inner Islands include La Digue (large enough to be populated), Grande Soeur and its sister Petit Soeur, Cocos Island and Bird Island. Bird Island is 100km north of the main island group so could involve a bit of a sailing adventure but is well worth the trip!

Outer Islands

The first thing to note is you won't be allowed to set sail for the Outer Islands on a bareboat charter. These are over 700 miles from then Inner Islands and are heavily protected - you won't find a crowded beach in sight! Among luminaries to have studied the Giant Tortoise population here was Charles Darwin, and you might find a tortoise whose mother met him...

If you are lucky enough to get a crewed yacht charter or cabin charter to the islands you will likely get to visit Aldabra Atoll. Aldabra Atoll is the second largest atoll in the world at over 100km wide at some parts, and is the mouth of an undersea volcano that has formed a giant coral reef.

A visit to the Outer Islands is normally the preserve of lucky scientists but will be one of the best memories you have if you can arrange a crewed charter catamaran Seychelles boat charter to get there.

Let's now look at the technicalities of a Seychelles yacht charter.

Catamaran Charter Seychelles

A crewed yacht charter is one of the best ways to enjoy a Seychelles boat charter holiday. With an often large vessel just for you and your fellow charter guests' use, on a crewed yacht charter the skipper and crew will look after your every need afloat. They will look after the tender as you venture ashore in at La Digue or Port Victoria, and perhaps make suggestions as to the best spots to enjoy a first class meal or water sport activity of your choice.

On a bareboat catamaran charter you will have the space and added privacy to get the luxury yacht from A-B at your own pace.

Seychelles Catamaran Charter Types

Bareboat

Though you will often have to have a sailing license and enough sailing experience for a larger vessel, a bareboat charter will give you complete freedom and privacy to do what you want. Unlike a monohull sailing yachts, a catamaran charter yacht will often come with en suite heads in all the cabins, an AC generator and all the comforts of home as you captain your own ship.

Skippered

A skippered yacht charter can range from a 46ft+ catamaran. The skipper aboard will look after the sailing and make suggestions as to your next destinations, with you playing as much or as little a role in getting from A-B as you want - you don't need to be an experienced sailor. It is customary to pay a tip at the end of the trip, on top of the €100-€150 a day fee for the skipper you pay as well as the basic charter fee.

Crewed

A crewed catamaran charter could mean a 60ft yacht with skipper and crew, but could also mean a luxury yacht or crewed yacht charter with a team of people looking after your every need. As well as sailing the vessel, they will cook, look after the housekeeping and water toys, and provide you with the service you expect at the top end of yacht charter holiday experiences.

Catamaran Types in the Seychelles

Sailing Catamaran

Ranging from a 40ft yacht to much, much larger, this will be enjoyable to sail (particularly with the wind aft of the beam) and unlike a monohull sailing yacht will often have en suite heads in all the staterooms. You will have plenty of entertainment space aboard and even the smaller vessels will have room for water toys such as paddleboards and kite surfing gear or even diving gear and jet skis. If the windage of the cruising catamaran sailboat gets too much, powerful twin engines will be able to get you upwind to your next destination too!Motor Catamaran

Ranging from 46ft to over 100ft LOA, you can charter a luxury motor yacht catamaran with crew or bareboat. Thanks to the wider beam they are more stable than a monohull motor yacht (no one going green at sea unless too much drink was involved!) and much faster. This could allow for longer legs, perhaps including a visit to Aldabra Atoll or Bird Island as part of your sailing holiday.

What can you do on a Catamaran charter in the Seychelles?

Very like a Virgin Islands yacht charter, a Montenegro sailing holiday will be about fun ashore, on and in the water. Thanks to the five star resorts, beautiful beaches and excellent sailing on the Indian Ocean islands, a charter yacht can be a base for some fantastic runs ashore as well as a great place to be as you escape to sea, perhaps going snorkellingoff St Anne Island.

From beaches to marine life such as sea turtles, land animals like tortoises and astounding flora, a Seychelles catamarancharter has almost everything you could want from a yacht charter holiday.

What does an average day on a Seychelles Yacht charter look like?

A catamaran charter boat charter in the Seychelles can mean a variety of things to different people. The sailing can be challenging at times but no less fun for it, so a blast at sea every day will be a core part of the fun.

If a sandy beach is an integral part of the fun, there are plenty to be had here, and for those who want to party until the sun comes up, there are places for that too.

For the family or older ones, you can sail between hidden coves and quiet sandy beaches, while visiting fishing villages and quieter towns.

As such your typical day could be a mix of things, from an early start to blast off to the next resort to stumbling back aboard as the seagulls are waking up!

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Catamaran In the Seychelles?

If you are on a skippered or crewed catamaran charter you do not need a license to sail on the Indian Ocean - you can just turn up at the marina and go.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat catamaran charter and in some cases a Day Skipper or ICC may not be enough for boats over 45 feet in length, you will need to check with the charter agent but here are some examples of typical sailing qualifications that will allow you to charter in most countries:

**International Certificate of Competence:** This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

**RYA Qualifications:** If you have the following qualifications you will typically be able to take a bareboat charter out of Rhodes (but it is worth checking as per above), these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipperor Yachtmaster.

**American** **Sailing** **Association (ASA):** The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted but also check as per above

**US** **Sailing**: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Best Time to Book Your Seychelles Catamaran Yacht Charter

Unlike Europe, the sailing season in the Seychelles archipelago runs from November to April - perfect for a dose of winter sun. The summer monsoon is settled and you will encounter weather between 25-35 degrees C.

Within this period, between December and February you will find the winds are from the SE and rarely get over 14 knots.

If you can get to the Seychelles outside of school holidays you will find the sailing weather at its best and the resorts less crowded.

The Climate

**South East Monsoon:** Thanks to being on the Equator the winds in the Seychelles never get too strong in the sailing season.

Frequently asked questions
What should I consider when hiring a Catamaran?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Catamaran in Seychelles?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the catamaran hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Catamaran breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company and they can typically send someone from the charter base

What should I think of before I hire a Catamaran in Seychelles?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the catamaran before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a Catamaran?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. If you choose to have a skipper on board your catamaran you won't require licences.
