On an Angra do Heroismo yacht charter with Borrow a Boat you can explore much of the Azores within an easy sail either with your family or friend. Whatever you want from an Azores sailing trip, from the whale watching to the volcanoes, an Angra boat rental is going to be an unforgettable experience.
While many visit the Azores archipelago for its natural beauty - whales and volcanoes - Angra do Heroismo is a beautiful city in its own right with 500 years of history as an important Atlantic trading port. A rest stop for ships heading from Europe to the Americas, Angra has seen kings, nobles and traders pass through, many of whom have left their mark with its architecture.
You the boat renter will find Angra a destination in its own right with its quaint alleyways, beautiful houses, churches and forts that make the city an ideal out of the way family holiday destination. This has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its timeless beauty.
Terceira, the central Azores island on which Angra is its capital, is like the other islands a dormant volcano with lush forests and a high mountain - the 1,021 metre high Serra de Santa Barbara. Bring your walking boots on your Angra do Heroismo yacht charter as it'd be a shame to miss such a hike!
As a sailing holiday destination, the Azores have lots to offer for a family sailing holiday or just as an escape for a couple on a quiet island hopping cruise.
Terceira itself is an island worth exploring on your Angra do Heroismo yacht charter. Climb to the viewpoint on Monte Brasil to see the natural harbour on which Angra sits, before heading off to Caldeira de Guilherme Moniz - at 3km in diameter this is the largest volcanic crater in the Azores. This has caves that go 100 metres deep - don't worry, it doesn't get too hot! The Algar do Carvão is another underworld well worth exploring too. For diving enthusiasts, you can explore the cemetery of anchors and the wreck of the Libador.
On your Angra yacht charter you will want to see whales. Whale watching can be done on a paid tour where the captain will know the best places to see the population of resident sperm whales and dolphins, though it is estimated that a third of all great whales pass through the Azores islands every year thanks to its fertile feeding grounds.
Where else to go on your sailboat charter or motorboat charter? There are actually five islands in the central group of the Azores that are within easy reach of the boat renter. On your cruise out of Terciera, you can then explore the other islands in the group - Santa Cruz de Graciosa, Pico, Faial, and Sao Jorge make for an excellent week-long Azores yacht charter holiday. To the SE is the most populous island in the archipelago, Sao Miguel with its geysers and lakes.
This is a regional airport with flights direct from Portugal. From the UK or US you should fly to Lisbon and connect to flight to the island from there. You can also fly direct to nearby Sao Miguel and take a ferry to Angra but this takes a bit longer.

Whether on a sailboat or motor boat on a bareboat charter or crewed luxury yacht charter you can explore Terceira and the Central Azores islands on your Angra do Heroismo yacht charter. Let's look at what such an itinerary will involve.
7 Days - Central Azores and Sao Miguel: Leaving Angra do Heroismo on Terciera you head SE for a long leg of sailing to Sao Miguel, mooring at Ponta Delgada or Vila Franca do Campo. Visit Furnas and the geysers of the east of the island as well as see the green and blue hued water of the Sete Cidades on the west. Your next sail is a long leg north-west to PIco in the Central Azores where you can see another great caldera. Sao Jorge with its beautiful coast and flora will be your next destination. You then sail to Santa Cruz de Graciosa where you should get your hiking boots on and explore inland again. Return the yacht to its owner at Angra after your exciting sailing trip through the Azores.
The hottest time - and the most expensive time of year are the school holiday months of July and August. If you are limited to these months then be prepared to pay a premium on the boatyou are hiring and in the marinas you visit.
The sailing season in the Azores runs from April to October so it may pay to go earlier or later in the year. The weather is still a lot warmer than in Northern Europe - be prepared to smile in your tee shirt as you see locals bundled up in their winter jackets - but you will find the locals warmer toward you, the marinas cheaper and to have parted with less cash on the holiday in the first place. As a tip? October is better than April as the Atlantic Ocean is still warm from the summer months.
This dominates the weather in the region. For you the sailor you will find the temperatures around 23 degrees C between April and October and a bit cooler at night. Generally speaking you can expect F4-5 winds from the west between April and August then it coming from the NE - E and building in September and October as the high pressure moves north.
The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a paid captain, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip. Address any questions you have to the boat owner via our team through the website.
Marina d'Angra has a mid sized marina with 250 berths capable of taking yachts of up to 25 metres LOA.
The sailing season runs from April to October thanks to the temperature and winds. This is a subtropical Atlantic archipelago with some of the best sailing conditions close to Portugal. If you want a quiet, more authentic sailing holiday, do try to visit outside school holidays - October is often the best with the sea still warm and the heat nowhere as fierce.
You will typically pay 50% of the final price up front on making your reservation for the yacht rental on our website and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card to the staff on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.
If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.
You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Dress for warm weather but do have something for tropical rains - light but waterproof. If you have a paid captain don't forget the tip at the end! Do address any questions to the owner or company through our website or by phone - they will be happy to help. Review your holiday after you return.
If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered yacht charter you typically don't require licences - just board the boat and off you go!
