Why a Superyacht Charter
A very popular yacht charter destination for those on a charter yacht sailing holiday, Greece can be a variety of things to different people. It has a nighttime economy comparable to that of the Balearic Islands (for example on Mykonos in the Cyclades Islands), a history at least as deep as anywhere in the world (Rhodes in the Dodecanese Islands), great gastronomic attractions (such as Antiparos in the Cyclades) and a cosmopolitan flair too (Athens or Volos!). It is possible for two groups on a Greek yacht charter to visit similar places as part of their itineraries and come away with completely different experiences. Let's take a look at where you can go on your yacht charter holiday below.
There are seven broad yacht charter destinations you can enjoy on a Greece luxury yacht charter. Let's take a look at them below.
Athens and Saronic Gulf
With the country's capital a core attraction, the Saronic Gulf sits roughly in the middle of of Greek waters. Athens itself is incredibly popular with Greece yacht charter vacationers thanks to its international airport and large number of marinas that are major charter bases. This goes even without speaking of the ancient ruins and bustling cosmopolitan vibe that makes the city worth a city break in its own right.
Sailing west from the Greek capital you soon arrive at the relative peace and quiet of the Saronic Islands. The Saronic Islands have their subcultures and quiet authenticity that is wildly different to that of the capital itself, even while having their own elements of Greek mythos and history attached to them.
The Peloponnese peninsula to the west of the Saronic Gulf is still within the orbit of Athens. You will likely fly into Athens airport to get here. Even so it is much quieter and astoundingly beautiful. Many Athenians visit this area of the East Mediterranean to escape the heat and buzz of their home city and you will find that the towns cater to them as much as they would Northern Europeans. This adds a lick of authenticity that you might not find so much elsewhere on your Greek yacht charter holiday.
To the NW of the capital, and through the Corinth Canal you soon reach the Ionian Sea. The seven main islands include the Ionian island of Corfu, Lefkas, Kefalonia and Zakynthos, all of which have their marinas and nearby international airports. They also have their own cultures and place in history - for instance the Ionian island of Corfu wasn’t successfully invaded by the Ottomans unlike nearly every other Greek island, and has its cultural influences instead from the Venetians and British.
On an Ionian Sea superyacht charter you will find beaches (such as Shipwreck Beach) that can only be accessed by sea and are very popular among Greece yacht charter vacationers as a result.
Including the beautiful island Santorini, the fun and buzz of Mykonos and the gastronomic attractions on Antiparos, the Cyclades Islands offer a wide variety to offer someone on a private yacht charter in their own right.
Just a few hours sail east of Athens, these are perhaps the most popular yacht charter destination across Greek waters. You will find secluded beaches and great sailing on the boisterous Aegean Sea as you do - a great mix of fun on and off the water.
Just off the Turkish coast, the idyllic Dodecanese Islands have a lot to offer Greece yacht charter vacationers. From the Colossus on Rhodes to the mountainous smaller islands and sustainable holidays focused Kos, there is a wide variety on offer among these Greek islands too. From immersing yourself in the history to anchoring off secluded beaches, you will soon find the Dodecanese Islands a worthwhile yacht charter destination in their own right.
Made famous in the Hollywood film Mamma Mia, the Sporades Island chain offer perhaps a bit of Greek island life that you imagine yet never quite see across other islands in the country.
As well as being somewhat less busy and more authentic than the likes of the Saronic Islands for example, you will find the temperatures a little cooler and more comfortable than their more southern neighbours. While the sailing season is shorter, you will find a sandy beach to relax on without feeling you’re in a blast furnace as with so much of the rest of the Aegean islands!
Northern Greece Mainland
You may fly into Thessaloniki or Volos for a Northern Greece yacht charter. Both cities are big and as much fun as Athens but far less focused on the tourist dollar so you may find them more welcoming and authentic than other locations like Mykonos. Setting sail on your crewed motor yacht or sailing yacht from Volos you can explore the Pagasetic Gulf where Jason and the Argonauts were supposed to have set sail from on their famous quest. Beyond, you can reach the Aegean islands of the Sporades and Dodecanese.
From Thessaloniki you may join your charter yacht at Nea Moudania on the Chalkidiki Peninsula - a three pronged peninsula that has a range of destinations on offer from beautiful beaches to the mythical Mount Athos religious community (that women are forbidden from visiting).

Superyacht Charter Greece
With your luxury charter yacht as a base, the crew will look after your needs while you focus on fun and relaxation. On your sailing yacht or motor yacht you can access isolated, secluded beaches inaccessible to others or fun islands such as Ios in the Cyclades.
You can go ashore at different locations to enjoy socialising and the best restaurants in Athens or Rhodes Town and then perhaps disappear to rebalance off a quiet retreat like Skorpios off Lefkada the next. Often the boat charter will carry water toys such as a motor boat, windsurfing gear and jet skis for you to blast around a quiet bay and have fun out of the sight and sound of others.
A Greek superyacht charter is best enjoyed in the summer months between May and September with the peak season in July and August on your sailing yacht or motor yacht luxury charter yacht.
A Greece luxury crewed yacht charter is one of the safest, most luxurious and most convenient ways to travel and enjoy beautiful locations from the quiet of the Sporades Islands to the buzz of Little Venice on Mykonos on your yacht charter holiday.

Types of Superyacht charter
Here are a selection of charter yachts that you may choose from to enjoy on your Greece superyacht charter holiday, whether on a bareboat charter basis or crewed yacht charter yacht rental basis. Connect with the yacht owner or charter company through us today to arrange your Greece superyacht charter!
Whether sailing yachts or power catamarans, these have a wide beam and shallow draft and make for spacious and comfortable luxury yachts. Even the smaller vessels (15m LOA and up) will have en suite heads in the cabins, and can often carry water toys like jet skis and paddleboards aboard. You can have a crewed catamaran charter or bareboat charter depending on the size of vessel and what you want from a yacht charter vacation.
From a catamaran to a luxury crewed motor yacht charter these are faster and often have far more space. Expect a more comfortable, premium experience on motor yacht, ranging from a mini cruiser to top end superyacht charter vessels. You can have crewed yacht charter or bareboat charter depending on the size of vessel with the skipper and crew looking after you.
The larger crewed yachts are often available on a corporate yacht charter or bespoke yacht charter basis as a means of escaping to an out of the way place without distraction. A luxury charter yacht like this will have water toys such as a speed boat, jet ski and diving equipment so you can enjoy water sports even without having to go ashore.
Whether a classic racing yacht or more modern cruiser racer sailing yacht, these sleek, stylish and more traditional sailboats still have the space you need but can sail in near silence with just the sound of the wind and waves as you move along under wind power alone. These can come as something smaller or a 30 metre plus private luxury charter yacht too with water toys and a skipper and crew looking after you on your bespoke yacht charter.
Weather conditions in Greece:
Luxury yacht charters are best when augmented by great weather. The perfect time for a premium charter in Greece are:
On the Aegean Sea it can get fiercely hot in the summer months of July and August with temperatures regularly getting well over 30 degrees C. At the same time the north-easterly Meltemi wind can blow up to a Force 7 on the Aegean. As a general rule it starts building from a light breeze at around dawn and reaches peak strength at around 13:00, only easing at around sunset, making for some exciting sailing conditions downwind but lumpy and wet when beating! As a general rule, people prefer to leave the dock early in the morning to avoid the wind at peak strength - that can sit at a F7 in the afternoon.
If very hot weather isn’t your thing, then do consider going in Spring months of May and June or Autumn (September and October) when the temperatures can be far warmer than Northern Europe but still more comfortable.
May - June (Early Season): Average temperatures are in the 18 degree C range though it can get cooler at night. On hotter days it can get up to around 28 degrees C. The sea breeze, the Bora is much less feisty than the Aegean Sea’s Meltemi and never gets above a F6. Expect a bit of rainfall too - that’s what makes the islands so green!
July-August (Peak Season): Temperatures climb again to an average of around 25 degrees C in the day but drop off to a comfortable temperature in the evening. The climate is changing so even here you will see upward variations into the 30s at times. The Bora again never gets too boisterous, though to the south of Lefkas there is the localised Eric wind that blows up considerably more in August.
September - October (Late Season): Things start to cool off and the winds get less boisterous too. Expect 18 degrees C in September and 15 in October. The Ionian Sea remains warm though and perhaps a better idea for swimming than May!
When to Visit Greece
In the peak season of July and August, Greek waters can be incredibly busy with those on charter holidays. This does mean the marinas fill up pretty quickly - as do the bars, tavernas and restaurants! For some, this is part of the fun, but things can get a bit frenetic.
For those who like a quieter sailing experience, perhaps visit in September or October? The waters are still warm, but the villages and towns quieter. You may find some of the key bars and restaurants have closed though.
On your luxury yacht or superyacht you can enjoy the best of a Greek yacht charter.
