Now a major fishing port, Portocolom was a major export center for Mallorcan wine for many years until the Phylloxera blight wiped out the island's vineyards in the 19th Century. Explore Portocolom By Renting A Yacht

On the east coast of Majorca, your Portocolom yacht charter gives you ample opportunity to explore the coast of the island and beyond to either Menorca or Ibiza on a longer sailing vacation.

The town lies on the Cala d'Or, a beautiful bay with a long, sandy beach and quiet, laid back vacation resorts. A short sail can take you to a secluded cove to drop anchor and enjoy the peace, quiet and scenery.

For a bit of coastal walking, you shouldn't miss nearby Cala Figuera - a fishing village that is like taking a step back in time. Very beautiful, it retains its character through its main industry fishing.

Many boat rental vacations never involve leaving the island itself that has so much on offer you don't really need to sail elsewhere. There is something for everyone to be found - nightspots in the different tourist towns, the city of Palma with its cosmopolitan buzz, national parks, secluded coves and secluded bays, and a marine nature reserve with an uninhabited island.

A two-week yacht charter can allow you to explore further afield. Many will take in Mallorca and Ibiza but a number will head for Menorca and circumnavigate that as well as Mallorca.

To the SW of Mallorca are the islands of Ibiza and Formentera. These have a bit of a reputation as a party capital but are in fact renowned for their laid back, alternative culture.

To the northeast is Menorca - another famous vacation island with its resorts, fishing villages and great sandy beaches.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Portocolom

Though many a sailing vacation from Portocolom can involve a circuit of Majorca, you can easily island hop even on a seven-day sailboat trip. Here we suggest two such itineraries - to Menorca and to Ibiza.

7 days - Mahon and Mallorca: Sailing out of Portocolom you head north-east to Menorca. Pausing at Cabo Pera on Mallorca for the first night you cross to Menorca the next. Your first night will be in Ciutadella, the original capital until the British moved governance to Mahon for its harbor. Over the next couple of days you will then make your way to Mahon, pausing at different calas (bays) to relax and enjoy the solitude. The next day will be a big sailing day of around 60 nautical miles back towards Porto Pedro and then home to Portocolom.

14 days - Ibiza and Mallorca: This is an opportunity to experience the two main climates of the Balearic Islands. Ibiza is the most southerly of the islands and has a SE breeze that many find the best sailing on the Mediterranean Sea. After crossing to Ibiza, spending a night in Ibiza Town or Santa Eulalia, the sheltered bays of Formentera and then San Antonio on your return leg before heading across to Port Adriano or Palma. The NE breeze dominates Mallorca and you will experience this for the second week as you head clockwise around the island, and round to the east coast and home port of Portocolom.

Best Times To Rent A Yacht In Portocolom

The sailing season in the Balearic Islands is best from May to October. The major party towns heat up to full frenzy in June to August. It is very much down to what you want from a sailing vacation in the islands - if partying all night is on the cards, the top DJs will hit the region in that time. If the quiet life is what you seek, then do try to get out during term time - the sea is still warm in September and October, though the Tramontana wind starts to be more frequent at this time of year, as it eases off in early May.

Sailing Weather In Portocolom

The northeast breeze common to coastal Mediterranean France dominates Majorca and provides cool relief from the summer heat. It never really gets above 17 knots or so so there will be some exciting sailing but never more than is fun. You will see more precipitation towards the beginning and end of the sailing season (May and October) but the temperatures rarely stray below 15-17 degrees during those times. In the height of summer (July/August), it isn't as hot as mainland Spain, though you will see the odd few days in the 30+ C range. For Northern Europeans and those from other cooler climates, this makes for a perfect boat rental vacation!
