The Leeward Island chain of the US Virgin Islands are a US protectorate on the northern Caribbean Sea. Your catamaran charter is likely to begin on St Thomas thanks to the island's international airport with links to the US and Northern Europe.
Charlotte Amalie is the capital of St Thomas, and with its cruise terminal caters to sailing and cruise tourists with its excellent Duty Free shopping, bars, restaurants and nightlife.
St Thomas itself has many luxury resorts and beaches, and is a fairly cosmopolitan introduction to the Virgin Islands. Magens Bay is one of the best beaches on the north coast, and you can enjoy the sunset on Magens Bay - or a full day of sunbathing and water sports as so many do.
Let's take a look at where else you can visit on your US Virgin Island catamaran charter.
On a longer catamaran charter US Virgin Islands you could even reach St Vincent on the Windward Islands. For now, let's take a look at the likely destinations you can reach over a one or two week US Virgin Islands boat charter.
One of the smaller US Virgin Islands, Water Island lies just off Charlotte Amalie on the south coast of St Thomas.
With a tiny population, a few hotels and a lot of quiet, beautiful beaches, Water Island is just the place to visit to stop your ears ringing after a day or two of fun in town ashore.
Just a short sail from the east coast of St Thomas is the island of St John. You may wish to make landfall at Cruz Bay, the centre of the action on St John. With lots of entertainment ashore but lacking a cruise terminal, it is quieter than Charlotte Amalie but is nonetheless has lots to do on a run ashore.
The north coast of St John has some of the best beaches. Honeymoon Bay at the old Caneel Bay resort is the only part of Caneel Bay open after the leaseholders relinquished the lease when the hurricanes of 2017 impacted the area. This, like Maho Bay and Trunk Bay has its share of water sports and beach bars - all at a fee.
Trunk Bay is the only National Park Service beach where you pay a fee to enjoy, but when you see its sheer beauty you'll soon understand. Trunk Bay is one of the most photographed beaches in the world with its palm tree lined shoreline and beautiful white sand.
Maho Bay is quieter than Trunk Bay but can get crowded too. Free to use, Maho Bay is one of St John's visitors' favourite beaches thanks to its beauty and shallow, sandy bottom that reaches a good 20 metres from the waterline.
The Virgin Islands National Park accounts for a large part of St John. A well protected area, the Virgin Islands National Park has plenty to offer someone who wants to enjoy this Virgin Island to the full.
Coral Bay is a large south facing bay with a fun town that is beloved of those who live aboard their yachts full time. With a boat gypsy vibe, Coral Bay is a far cry from the cosmopolitan edginess of Cruz Bay let alone Charlotte Amalieand as such is a great destination for those who want to see the 'real Virgin Islands'!
St Croix and neighbouring Buck Island are renowned for their coral reefs, snorkeling and eco-tourism. A bit of a sail south-west from St Thomas, St Croix is nonetheless a great place to visit if you want something laid back and chilled out.
British Virgin Islands
You may come to the US Virgin Islands on a BVI yacht charter but even if not on a BVI yacht charter you will probably want to visit the British Virgin Islands of Jost Van Dyke, Tortola and Virgin Gorda on your US Virgin Islands boat charter.
Jost Van Dyke is notable for its beach bars at White Bay and the great yachting centre of Great Harbour. Sailing south, perhaps by Scrub Island you will reach Tortola. Road Town is the capital of the British Virgin Islands and like Charlotte Amalie has its own cruise terminal, bars, restaurants and so forth.
Just to the south of Tortola are the Little Sisters. These smaller islands include Norman Island, Peter Island and Cooper Island. Between Peter Island and Cooper Island is an artificial coral reef that is a draw to many visiting these islands.
Virgin Gorda's Spanish Town has an excellent marina and is an outpost town with lots to offer someone on a Virgin Island yacht rental. With excellent amenities and as much fun as you can possibly have ashore, the island is renowned as a hideaway for the high net worth too.
Spanish Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico
Heading west from St Thomas you soon reach the Spanish Virgin Islands of Vieques and Culebra. Tourism isn't as big here as it is in the other Virgin Islands but that makes for a major draw in its own right - for a taste of authentic Caribbean Sea island culture and life, the Spanish Virgin Islands shouldn't be missed.
Puerto Rico is another US protectorate. A big, fun island, Puerto Rico is another dose of authenticity you can get on your United States Virgin Island yacht rental.

With your luxury charter yacht as a base, on a crewed catamaran charter the crew will look after your needs while you focus on fun and relaxation. On your sailing yacht or motor yacht you can access isolated, sandy beaches inaccessible to others in quiet coves or islands such as Norman Island.
You can go ashore at different locations to enjoy socialising and the best restaurants in Charlotte Amalie and then perhaps disappear to rebalance off a quiet uninhabited island the next. Often the yacht rental will carry water toys such as a motor boat, windsurfing gear and a jet ski or two for you to blast around a quiet bay and have fun out of the sight and sound of others.
A US Virgin Islands luxury yacht charter is best enjoyed in the winter months between November and April with the peak season in December and January on your catamaran charter yacht.
A USVI luxury crewed yacht charter is one of the safest, most luxurious and most convenient ways to travel and enjoy beautiful locations from the quieter smaller islands to a more vibrant destination like White Bay on Jost Van Dyke on your boat rental holiday.

Here are a selection of charter yachts that you may choose from to enjoy on your USVI catamaran charter holiday, whether on a bareboat charter basis or crewed yacht charter basis.
A sailing catamaran will have a wide beam and is great for sailing with wind aft of the beam. Generally with twin engines, one in each hull, these vessels are very manoeuvrable in port too.
While sailing yachts, these have wide foredecks that have plenty of room for sunbathing, and down below, lots of entertainment space too. Cabins will generally have en suite showers and toilets.
These can come as a bareboat charter or crewed charter yachts too.
Like their sailing boat sisters, motor yacht catamarans have plenty of space for relaxing and entertaining. Without a mast or sails they have more room on deck for enjoying the sun too.
As with the catamaran sailboat, the power catamaran will have water toys on larger luxury yachts, and all will have spacious staterooms below decks.
Again, with powerful twin engines, the power catamaran will have a good lick of speed on the water and will be very manoeuvrable in port.
Luxury yacht charters are best when augmented by great weather. The perfect time for a premium charter in USVI are:
Early Season (November): The last of the hurricanes should have gone by now. It will be warm but not uncomfortable in the mid 20s C range. Expect easterlies of 12-15mph. The dray season is beginning but you may get the odd soaking - hardly uncomfortable in such warmth!
Peak Season (December and January): Easteries again prevail most of the time, building to a fairly constant 15-20mph. The dry season is in full swing so expect little in the way of rain. It will be comfortably warm at around 25 C most of the day.
Late Season (February to March): Winds: easterlies, 25mph fairly steadily. A little rain is to be expected. Temperatures increase to the high 20s C.
Northern hemisphere summer sailing is possible. The marinas are cheaper and it can be quieter. However this is approaching hurricane season when the Caribbean goes into hibernation. It is hotter and wetter, helping breed stormy weather.
For those who enjoy top end yacht racing, St Thomas International Regatta is widely held to be among the best of its kind in the Leeward Island chain. This is in March every year.
December and January are when the marinas are at their busiest and most expensive. It is very crowded, even out on the islands. Most of the social events are at their best at this time of year though and the buzz is a good one.
For those after a quieter time after the crowds have gone, try to visit USVI in April. The crowds have generally gone and the marinas are cheaper. It can be wetter as the wet season kicks in but that could well be worthwhile sacrifice to enjoy the islands of the Caribbean Sea at their most authentic.
On your luxury yacht or superyacht catamaran charter yacht you can enjoy the best of USVI and the nearby Virgin Islands.
Day 1 Depart Compass Point Marina on St Thomas and head for Cruz Bay on St John. A short sail next to Caneel Bayto enjoy Honeymoon Beach.
Day 2 From Caneel Bay, head for White Bay on Jost Van Dyke for an evening of fun ashore.
Day 3 Set sail for Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda. Spend the evening here.
Day 4 With a pause snorkeling over the Rhone Marine Park, moor off Norman Island for the next evening.
Day 5 Back to USVI, this time landing at Buck Island National Monument off St Croix for its great diving and snorkeling.
Day 6 Perhaps mooring off Water Island for the evening, spend the next day in Charlotte Amalie for a cosmopolitan fix.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.
You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the catamaran hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.
If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company and they can typically send someone from the charter base
You should consider do you have the experience to handle the catamaran before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.
If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. If you choose to have a skipper on board your catamaran you won't require licences.
