FAQ Title: Frequently Asked Questions: Catamaran Charter in Greece

How much does a catamaran charter in Greece cost?
A weekly catamaran charter in Greece ranges from €3,500 for a smaller, older model in the shoulder season to over €15,000 for a luxury crewed multihull in August. Budget Tip: Unlike Croatia, Greek municipal town quays are incredibly cheap (often just €10–€20 a night), though finding space for a wide catamaran in peak season can be challenging, making anchoring in bays very popular.
Do I need a license for a bareboat catamaran in Greece?
Yes. Greek maritime law strictly requires the skipper to hold an internationally recognized license (e.g., RYA Day Skipper, ICC). Uniquely, Greece also requires a "Co-Skipper." If your second-in-command doesn't have a license, they must sign a formal Declaration of Honor confirming their sailing experience.
Where is the best place to sail a catamaran in Greece?
If you want calm, flat waters and lush green landscapes, rent from Lefkada or Corfu and sail the Ionian Sea. If you prefer historical sites and moderate winds, depart from Athens into the Saronic Gulf. Avoid the Cyclades in August unless you are prepared for the strong Meltemi winds.
What is the best time of year to charter a catamaran in Greece?
The optimal time is the "shoulder season" - May, June, September, and October. During these months, the sea is warm, the marinas are less crowded, and you avoid the fierce Meltemi winds that blow through the Aegean in July and August.
Do catamaran charters in Greece include fuel and mooring fees?
Generally, no. For a bareboat charter, you pay for the fuel you consume and your nightly mooring fees. However, because catamarans have a shallow draft, you can save hundreds of euros by anchoring for free in beautiful bays instead of paying for a spot on a town quay.

Why Rent a Catamaran in Greece?

The Anchoring Advantage: Traditional Greek fishing ports are tiny and operate on a "first-come, first-served" basis. Because catamarans are wide, finding space on a town quay in August is tough. However, a catamaran's shallow draft turns this into an advantage: you can anchor safely in the shallow, turquoise waters of the bay for free, and take your dinghy ashore for dinner!

  • Stability in the Meltemi: During July and August, the Aegean Sea is dominated by the 'Meltemi' wind, which can whip up choppy seas. A catamaran's twin hulls prevent the boat from leaning (heeling), keeping your family comfortable and your drinks safely on the table.
  • Massive Living Spaces: Modern catamarans feature flybridges, forward lounging nets, and seamless indoor-outdoor saloons. It feels like a floating villa.
  • Calm Ionian Waters: If you want a stress-free family holiday with flat water and green scenery, renting a catamaran from Lefkada or Corfu in the Ionian Sea is the perfect choice.
Captain's Insider Tip: "If you are chartering a catamaran in Greece, always book a boat with a watermaker and generator (or solar panels). Since you will likely be anchoring out in stunning bays rather than docking at town quays (which often lack power/water facilities), independence from shore infrastructure is the key to a luxury experience."
