Frequently Asked Questions: Mallorca Catamaran Rentals

Why is a catamaran the best choice for a Mallorca yacht rental?
A catamaran offers exceptional stability and vast deck space, which is ideal for families and large groups. Its dual-hull design ensures a comfortable experience while navigating the scenic coastline and anchoring in Mallorca’s famous turquoise bays.
Can a catamaran anchor closer to the beaches in Mallorca?
Yes, the shallow draft of a catamaran allows you to anchor much closer to the shore than a monohull sailboat. This is perfect for accessing the crystal-clear waters of Es Trenc or the hidden coves of the southeast coast for snorkeling.
Is a captain required for a catamaran charter in Palma de Mallorca?
While bareboat options are available for licensed sailors, many guests choose a skippered catamaran. A professional captain handles the navigation and knows the best-hidden "calas" to ensure a relaxing and luxury experience.
What luxury amenities are typical for a Mallorca catamaran rental?
Luxury catamarans in Mallorca often feature air-conditioned cabins, en-suite bathrooms, and high-end sound systems. They provide a "floating villa" environment that matches the sophisticated lifestyle of the island's premier marinas.
Is a catamaran suitable for sailing to the Cabrera National Park?
Absolutely. A catamaran provides a stable and social platform for the crossing to Cabrera. Its large deck areas are perfect for wildlife spotting and enjoying the Mediterranean sun during the journey to this protected archipelago.

Catamaran rental in Mallorca: room to spread out on a boat that stays level

Renting a catamaran in Mallorca puts your family or group on a wide, twin-hulled boat that does not lean under sail. You get a full saloon plus cockpit on one flat deck, big trampolines up at the bow, and a shallow draft that lets you swing at anchor right off the sand instead of dropping in deep water like a single-hull sailboat.

Why pick a catamaran on Mallorca?

  • The deck stays flat: No heel means kids can walk around, coffee stays in the mug, and cooking under sail is a normal activity instead of an event.
  • You anchor closer in: Draft of about 4 to 5 feet lets you drop the hook right over the sand at Es Trenc or tuck into the cliff-walled cove at Cala Pi.
  • Everyone gets a room: The four-cabin layout typical of a 42-foot cat gives each couple or pair a private double, plus two heads with separate showers on most models.
Captain’s tip: the Cabrera archipelago
“Cabrera is a national marine park, so you need to reserve a mooring buoy through the park authority ahead of time. In July and August the 50 buoys in the main bay book out weeks in advance. Once you are there, the payoff is a night sky darker than anywhere else in the Balearics because there is no development on the island.”

Catamarans that get booked most often

Three models American guests come back to when they sail out of Palma or Port d’Andratx:

  • Lagoon 42: Four double cabins, level walk-through from cockpit into saloon, and easygoing sail handling for guests who are learning as they go.
  • Bali 4.4: Bali’s signature layout, with a solid front cockpit at the bow and a large fold-up door between the aft cockpit and saloon, so the whole main deck opens up.
  • Fountaine Pajot Astrea 42: Flybridge helm with a second steering station upstairs, which makes reading anchorages and coming into a slip much easier.

Sample one-week itinerary along the south coast

  1. Day 1, Palma to Cala Pi: Head east out of Palma. Cala Pi is a narrow, cliff-lined cove with sandy holding, a good first-night anchorage.
  2. Day 2, Cala Pi to Cabrera: Short sail to Es Trenc for a swim over pale sand, then cross to your pre-booked mooring buoy at Cabrera.
  3. Day 3, Cabrera to Cala d’Or: Back to Mallorca’s east coast. The Cala d’Or marina is a practical stop for a shower, provisioning and dinner ashore.
  4. Day 4, Cala d’Or to Porto Colom: Coastal run up to Porto Colom, one of the better-sheltered natural harbors on the island, with room to anchor in the inner bay.
  5. Day 5, Porto Colom to Colonia de Sant Jordi: South again, stopping for lunch at Cala Marmols or Cala Figuera before tying up at the fishing harbor of Colonia de Sant Jordi.
  6. Day 6, Colonia de Sant Jordi to Portals Nous: Cross the Bay of Palma to Puerto Portals. On a catamaran the afternoon Embat chop stays comfortable for kids.
  7. Day 7, Portals Nous to Palma: Short morning leg back to base for handover.
