Do I need a sailing licence to charter a yacht in Mallorca with a skipper?
No. With a professional skipper on board, none of your guests need a licence. The skipper holds the Spanish PER (Patrón de Embarcaciones de Recreo) or a recognised international equivalent (ICC, RYA Day Skipper) validated for Spanish waters, and is the legal master of the vessel for the week.
How much does a skipper cost on a Mallorca yacht charter?
Around EUR 200 to 280 per day, or EUR 1,400 to 1,750 for a standard Saturday-to-Saturday week. On top of that, you pay a food kitty of about EUR 35 to 50 per day locally, since the skipper shares meals with the group.
Where will the skipper take us on our Mallorca yacht charter?
You decide together at the Saturday briefing. From Palma, most weeks combine the Bay of Palma with the southeast calas (Cala d'Or, Mondragó, Es Trenc) or the southwest Tramuntana coast (Sa Dragonera, Sóller). From Port de Pollença, the north and Cap de Formentor are within easy reach. The skipper adjusts each leg to the embat forecast and what you cared most about (calas, towns, swim time).

When is the best time for a skippered yacht charter in Mallorca?
Late April to late October. July and August are the hottest, the busiest and the most expensive. May, June and September are the months experienced charter guests tend to prefer: the embat is at its most reliable, the calas are emptier, mooring is easier, and prices drop noticeably outside peak.
Where does the skipper sleep on board during our Mallorca charter?
In the forward or aft cabin, depending on the layout. On smaller yachts, sometimes in the saloon. Sleeping arrangements are agreed at the Saturday briefing so the privacy question is settled from day one.
How big a group can I bring on a Mallorca yacht charter with skipper?
Two to twelve guests plus the skipper, depending on the boat. Families tend to choose catamarans for the cabin layout and the deck space. Couples and small groups usually go for a sailing yacht or a smaller motor yacht.

Why book Mallorca with a skipper?

  • No PER to chase: Spain is one of the stricter charter countries. With a professional skipper aboard, no one in your group needs the PER, an ICC, or any other certificate.
  • Local know-how: when the embat will fill on the south coast, which cala on the east is sheltered from the afternoon swell, where on Sa Dragonera the holding is genuinely good. That is the part you cannot read off a chartplotter.
  • Med-mooring is someone else's problem: the marinas around Palma and Port d'Andratx pack boats stern-to with metres of slack rather than feet. The skipper does the manoeuvre. You watch from the cockpit with a drink.
  • Damage from handling falls on the skipper: if something goes wrong on a manoeuvre, it is the skipper's professional cover, not your security deposit.
  • Learn as much as you want, or none of it: most guests take the helm at some point during the week. The skipper teaches if you ask, and stays quiet if you do not.
Skipper's Insider Tip: "Plan around the embat. Mallorca's signature wind is a NE thermal sea breeze that fills around midday, peaks at 12 to 18 knots through the afternoon, and dies after sunset. We leave Palma early (08:30, latest 09:00) to be at anchor in a cala by lunch, before the embat builds chop on the open south coast. The afternoon is for swimming, not bashing into wind. If your route includes the Cabrera national park, book the anchoring permit a week ahead in high season; the daily quota fills."

The best regions for a skippered week in Mallorca

  • Bay of Palma: the easy first day. Short hop to Illetas or Es Caló d'es Moro for swimming, back to Palma for tapas at La Lonja in the evening.
  • Southwest and Tramuntana coast (Andratx to Sóller): the dramatic side. Sa Dragonera, the cliffs of Sa Trapa, the deep harbour of Port de Sóller. Tramuntana wind possible in shoulder season.
  • North (Pollensa, Cap de Formentor, Cala Sant Vicenç): the wilder week. Longer day-hops, fewer charter boats, the Formentor lighthouse as a turnaround point.
  • East and southeast calas (Cala d'Or, Mondragó, Cala Figuera, Es Trenc): the postcard side. Turquoise water, pine-fringed inlets, anchor-and-swim routine. Easy provisioning at any of the small ports.
  • Cabrera national park (south of Mallorca): a permit-restricted national park. Day or overnight visit, dolphins and Mediterranean monk seal sightings on a good day. Skipper handles the permit application.
