What is the maestrale and how does it affect a Tuscany yacht charter?
The maestrale is the dominant wind in the Tyrrhenian Sea, blowing from the northwest. In summer it builds as a thermal effect, filling late morning at 10 to 15 knots and often reaching 20 knots in the afternoon before dying after sunset. It works for the skipper rather than against: an early-morning departure puts you at anchor before the wind builds, and the afternoon is for swimming in a sheltered cove. The libeccio (southwest) is the wind to plan around: it brings swell and reduces visibility, and the skipper will move you to the lee of the Argentario or into Capraia.

On libeccio days I move the boat to the lee of the Argentario or into Capraia's Cala dei Mangani, both of which stay glassy when the south coast is blown out. Plan the fast legs early, plan the swim stops for after the wind drops."

The best regions for a skippered week in Tuscany
