Seget Donji was founded in 1564 when the Croat government of the time needed a castle to defend the residents of nearby Trogir in Central Dalmatia from attacks by the Ottoman Empire. The castle wasn't just for soldiers and aristocracy - it was there for the people to live in.
The village has grown through the years and while the castle remains a lovely place to hide from the summer heat while exploring the Croatian Adriatic town of Seget Donji which is now part of a larger conurbation that has merged with Trogir.
While in the town, do take a walk up the coast on a local walking route that takes in the coastline and has some beautiful views of the Adriatic Sea. The small islet of Trogir is close-by too, and is well worth a wander through its narrow streets.
The Mediterranean town of Seget Donji is just a 20 minute bus ride from Split and its international airport. From here you can set off to explore the Dalmatian Islands to the south or head north towards Zadar and the Kornati Islands.
The town is served by three main marinas, with the main one Marina Baotic right in Seget Donji itself, and is a major marina for charter boats.
Where it comes to a Seget Donji yacht charter, whether a skippered charter or bareboat yacht charter you will find the process of getting aboard and casting off very simple. After presenting your sailing license and paying your fee you will be shown around the boat and can cast off for your destination.
If your boat is in Marina Trogir on Ciovo Island, you can take a bus/taxi or just walk to Seget Donji to see the castle and older architecture of the town. Enjoy the mild summer heat and taste the Mediterranean cuisine on offer as you go.
Split Airport is served by airlines from all over Europe. This is just a 20-minute bus ride or taxi from Seget Donji and you can be aboard your boat in no time.
As an alternative to the bus/taxi route, there are several ferry sailings a day in summer that take you up the Croatian coast to Trogir. This might be a more relaxed way to see the Dalmatian coast ahead of your sailing holiday.
There are three marinas that serve Seget Donji and are a short bus ride from Split Bus Station. Though Marina Baoticis in the town itself, the other two are very close-by, just a taxi ride from the town.

Whether on a sailing yacht or motor yacht you can use your boat rental holiday to explore either north or south, taking in the Croatian coastline and islands as you go. Here we speak of two general itineraries each for a 7 or a 14-day luxury yacht charter. It is for you to work out your sailing route according to your needs.
Seget Donji and Dalmatia circular: Explore the Adriatic coast on your sailing trip, taking in towns like Skradin before heading out to the southern Kornati Islands and their national park. This is an opportunity to explore the coast and villages of Dalmatia on your catamaran, motorboat or sailboat. Many Croatian yacht charter routes head straight for the islands but this route takes in some of the mainlands, giving you a chance to meet locals and see what Croatia is about.
Seget Donji to Dubrovnik one way: At just over 140nm end to end this is an opportunity to idle in bars and wander in national parks while seeing two of Croatia's most beautiful towns. If you can plan a half-day ashore, do plan a half-day on Korcula Island or the beach resort of Hvar Town. The Pakleti islands have secluded coves and are worth a pause in a lagoon or two as you go.
Seget Donji to Dubrovnik circular: Some routes head out to Vis Island as a first stop and take in the offshore route out before coming back inshore of the islands on return. Doing no more than 22nm a day you can enjoy the sailing and venture ashore to various Dalmatian island towns and explore inland as you go.
Seget Donji to Zadar circular: Heading north out of Trogir you can explore the coastline of Croatia and perhaps stop off on the Kornati Islands as you go. These are some of the greatest natural wonders of the Adriatic with a saltwater inland lake and deep forest to explore. You will have to coast hop as you head north - seeing what mainland Croatia has on offer in places like Biograd, the medieval capital of Croatia.
The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. The ACI Marina chain also adds 20% to their berthing fees at this time of year. If you can charter outside of the peak period you will find it far quieter and less expensive. The climate is mild most of the sailing season with occasional rain showers.
April and May: There will be occasional rainy days but temperatures sit between 22-28C or higher. Winds are generally NW, 10-20 knots
June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat. Temperatures are from 26C and up to the mid-30s. The wind is generally NW 5-10 knots
September-October: In this part of the world it rains more in October and the temperature falls away to 10 degrees C in the evenings, though it can get up to a comfortable 20C on an autumn day. Winds can get up to 20 knots.
The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.
The main marina is Marina Baotic, but nearby you have ACI Marina Trogir and Marina Trogir
If you can get to sea outside of school holidays then you will find the marinas cheaper and less crowded. In September the sea is still warm and the temperatures comfortable. July and August are the peak times though.
You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.
If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.
You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.
If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.
