Seget Donji was founded in 1564 when the Croat government of the time needed a castle to defend the residents of nearby Trogir in Central Dalmatia from attacks by the Ottoman Empire. The castle wasn't just for soldiers and aristocracy - it was there for the people to live in.

The village has grown through the years and while the castle remains a lovely place to hide from the summer heat while exploring the Croatian Adriatic town of Seget Donji which is now part of a larger conurbation that has merged with Trogir.

While in the town, do take a walk up the coast on a local walking route that takes in the coastline and has some beautiful views of the Adriatic Sea. The small islet of Trogir is close-by too, and is well worth a wander through its narrow streets.

The Mediterranean town of Seget Donji is just a 20 minute bus ride from Split and its international airport. From here you can set off to explore the Dalmatian Islands to the south or head north towards Zadar and the Kornati Islands.

Split Airport

Split Airport is served by airlines from all over Europe. This is just a 20-minute bus ride or taxi from Seget Donji and you can be aboard your boat in no time.

As an alternative to the bus/taxi route, there are several ferry sailings a day in summer that take you up the Croatian coast to Trogir. This might be a more relaxed way to see the Dalmatian coast ahead of your sailing holiday.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Seget Donji

7 days

Seget Donji and Dalmatia circular: Explore the Adriatic coast on your sailing trip, taking in towns like Skradin before heading out to the southern Kornati Islands and their national park. This is an opportunity to explore the coast and villages of Dalmatia on your catamaran, motorboat or sailboat. Many Croatian yacht charter routes head straight for the islands but this route takes in some of the mainlands, giving you a chance to meet locals and see what Croatia is about.

Seget Donji to Dubrovnik one way: At just over 140nm end to end this is an opportunity to idle in bars and wander in national parks while seeing two of Croatia's most beautiful towns. If you can plan a half-day ashore, do plan a half-day on Korcula Island or the beach resort of Hvar Town. The Pakleti islands have secluded coves and are worth a pause in a lagoon or two as you go.

Seget Donji to Dubrovnik circular: Some routes head out to Vis Island as a first stop and take in the offshore route out before coming back inshore of the islands on return. Doing no more than 22nm a day you can enjoy the sailing and venture ashore to various Dalmatian island towns and explore inland as you go.

Seget Donji to Zadar circular: Heading north out of Trogir you can explore the coastline of Croatia and perhaps stop off on the Kornati Islands as you go. These are some of the greatest natural wonders of the Adriatic with a saltwater inland lake and deep forest to explore. You will have to coast hop as you head north - seeing what mainland Croatia has on offer in places like Biograd, the medieval capital of Croatia.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Seget Donji

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. The ACI Marina chain also adds 20% to their berthing fees at this time of year. If you can charter outside of the peak period you will find it far quieter and less expensive. The climate is mild most of the sailing season with occasional rain showers.
