Boat charter in Croatia

Croatia Bareboat Charter: Captain Your Own Yacht

Fly into Split or Dubrovnik on Friday, take over your yacht on Saturday, and spend a week island hopping the Adriatic on nobody's schedule but your own. Croatia checks bareboat licenses against its recognized list, so send us your certificate when you book. An ICC or an International Proficiency Certificate is the usual route for American sailors, and we confirm yours counts before you commit.

Croatia bareboat charter: common questions from US sailors

When should I book a bareboat charter in Croatia for the best choice of boats?
For July and August, book four to eight months out; the good catamarans go first. June and September are the experienced sailor's pick anyway: same wind, warmer water than spring, and harbors that empty out once the school vacations end.
Do US sailing licenses work for a bareboat charter in Croatia?
A state boating card alone usually does not. Croatia accepts certificates on its recognized list, and for American sailors that generally means an ICC or an International Proficiency Certificate issued through US Sailing or a sailing school. Send us what you hold and we confirm it with the base before you book.
How much does a bareboat charter in Croatia cost compared to a crewed one?
You save the captain's fee, which runs USD 190 to 240 per day in Croatia, plus the cost of feeding a professional for a week. The boat itself prices by size, age and season, and a June or September week costs meaningfully less than the identical boat in August.
What is the easiest bareboat route in Croatia for a first-time charter crew?
The Split loop: Split or Trogir to Braฤ, Hvar and Vis and back. Legs run two to four hours, there is always a harbor or anchorage within reach, and you can shorten or stretch the route mid-week without losing anything.
Can I rent a bareboat catamaran in Croatia with an American certificate?
Yes, on the same recognized paperwork as a monohull, an ICC or an IPC plus the radio certificate. Catamarans are the most requested boats in the Croatian fleet, so for peak weeks reserve early and note any multihull experience on your sailing resume.
Do I need a VHF radio license for a Croatia bareboat charter?
Yes. Croatian harbor authorities expect the skipper to carry a VHF radio certificate alongside the sailing license, and charter bases check both at handover. If you hold an ICC, several schools bundle the radio qualification into the same course.
What does the security deposit on a Croatia bareboat charter cover?
It is the cap on what you owe for ordinary damage to the boat, held on a credit card at check-in and released when the boat comes back in order. Most bases offer a damage waiver that cuts the deposit to a fraction for a fixed fee.
What happens if the weather turns bad during a bareboat charter in Croatia?
You sail around it. The bura, the strong northeast wind, announces itself in the forecast, and the island chain offers sheltered water and bail-out harbors on almost every leg. Bases brief you on the local patterns at handover, and staying an extra night in port costs a berth fee, not your plans.

Croatia bareboat charter: a week on the Adriatic with you at the helm

A Croatia bareboat charter starts with two flights and a set of keys: land in Split or Dubrovnik on Friday, sleep off the jet lag, and take command of your own yacht on Saturday afternoon. From there the week belongs to you. Anchor off the beach at Stiniva on Vis, sail past the walls of Dubrovnik that played King's Landing, tie up in a village where the restaurant owner is also the harbormaster. No captain, no crew, no schedule except the one your group argues out over breakfast. What Croatia asks in return is proof you can handle the boat: a license on its recognized list plus a VHF radio certificate.

Why American sailors bareboat in Croatia

  • Short, sheltered legs: the islands stack up close to the mainland, so a crew used to lake or coastal sailing settles in fast. Most days are two to four hours of actual sailing.
  • Reliable summer wind: the afternoon maestral builds to a steady 10 to 15 knots from the northwest on a typical day, then dies toward evening. Sporty enough to be fun, calm enough to sleep at anchor.
  • Your money goes to the boat: no captain fee, no crew gratuity, no captain's food budget. What you pay for is the yacht.
  • Every night looks different: a national park mooring in the Kornati one night, a stone harbor town the next, a bay with a single konoba grilling fish the night after.
  • Provisioning is painless: supermarkets sit within walking distance of the big marinas, and bases will point you to delivery services that stock the boat before you arrive.
Captain's insider tip: "Fly in a day early. The boat handover, the chart briefing and the provisioning run all land on Saturday afternoon, and doing them straight off a red-eye is how mistakes get made. Sleep in Split on Friday, shop Saturday morning, and you start the week rested with a full fridge while half the dock is still hunting for a grocery store."

Where to take your bareboat in Croatia

  • Dubrovnik and the south: start beneath the old city walls, then run to Mljet's saltwater lakes and the Elaphiti islands. Book a berth ahead in Dubrovnik in high season.
  • The Split loop: Braฤ, Hvar, Vis and back, the route most first-timers pick, with Stiniva cove and the Pakleni islands as the photo stops. Boats depart from Split and Trogir.
  • Kornati national park: 89 stripped-bare islands out of Zadar, closer to desert sailing than anything else in Europe. Bring cash for the park fee.
  • Istria: Roman ruins in Pula, truffle country ashore, and short hops along a coast that feels more Italian than Balkan. Start from the Istria fleet.

The license question, answered straight

Croatia publishes a list of foreign certificates it accepts, and the harbormaster can ask for yours at any port. A US state boating card usually is not on that list. The two documents American sailors actually charter on are the ICC and the International Proficiency Certificate that US Sailing and other schools issue to experienced sailors with logged miles. You also need a VHF radio certificate, and one other person aboard should be able to handle lines and follow instructions. Send us whatever paperwork you hold and we will confirm with the base that it works before you put money down. No license? The same fleet sails with a professional on our Croatia yacht charter with captain page.

How booking works

  1. Pick a base, a week and a boat; 90% of the fleet confirms instantly.
  2. Send your certificate and a short sailing resume for base approval.
  3. Put down a low deposit to lock the dates.
  4. At check-in, leave a refundable security deposit on a card or buy a damage waiver, then inspect the boat with the base crew.
  5. Get the local briefing, stow your food, and go sailing.

What is in the price, and what is not

The charter price buys the yacht, its equipment and the boat's insurance, with your damage exposure capped by the security deposit. You pay locally for fuel, marina nights along the way, the end-of-week cleaning and any park entries. Flights, food and the sundowners are on you. Compare sailing yachts in Croatia with catamarans in Croatia, browse the whole Croatia fleet, or read the bareboat charter guide if this is your first time chartering without a captain.
