Frequently asked questions about bareboat charter in Croatia

What do I need to charter a bareboat yacht in Croatia?
You need a recognised sailing qualification such as an ICC or an equivalent national certificate, a VHF radio certificate, and a crew list that the base registers at check-in. Croatian harbour authorities do check the documents, so bring the originals, not photos.
Does Croatia accept my sailing licence for a bareboat charter?
Croatia keeps an official list of foreign licences it recognises, and most national qualifications with a coastal or offshore rating are on it. Send us your certificate when you request a boat and we confirm acceptance with the charter base before you pay anything.
How much does a bareboat charter in Croatia cost?
The weekly price depends on boat size, age and season, and June or September weeks cost noticeably less than the peak. Compared with a skippered charter you save the skipper fee of EUR 170 to 240 per day, and you pay fuel, moorings and the end clean locally.
Where can I start a bareboat charter in Croatia?
The main bareboat bases are Split, Trogir, ล ibenik, Biograd, Zadar, Pula and Dubrovnik. Split and Trogir put you straight into the central Dalmatian islands, Zadar and Biograd are the gateway to the Kornati, and Dubrovnik opens the quieter south.
Which area of Croatia is best for a first bareboat charter?
Central Dalmatia, sailing out of Split or Trogir. The hops between Braฤ, Hvar, Vis and Korฤula are short, the anchorages are plentiful, and you are rarely more than a couple of hours from a marina if the forecast turns.
When is the best time of year for a bareboat charter in Croatia?
The season runs from late April to late October. July and August bring the warmest water and the fullest harbours. June and September give you the same sailing with emptier quays, easier berths and lower prices, which is why experienced crews book them first.
Can I rent a bareboat catamaran in Croatia?
Yes. Catamarans are among the most requested boats in our Croatian fleet, and bases approve them against the same recognised licence as a monohull. Some operators like to see a line about catamaran experience in your sailing CV, so mention it if you have it.
What is the difference between a bareboat and a skippered yacht charter in Croatia?
On a bareboat charter you are the skipper: you hold the licence, run the boat and choose the route. On a skippered charter a professional does that for a daily fee while you sail as guests. If nobody in your group holds a licence, skippered is your way onto the water.

Bareboat charter in Croatia: rent the yacht, run it yourself

A bareboat charter in Croatia is a yacht with your name on the crew list and nobody else's. You take the boat over on Saturday, plan with your own crew, and spend the week working along the Dalmatian coast at whatever pace suits you. Croatia makes this easy: the charter fleet is one of the largest in the Mediterranean, the islands sit close together, and the summer weather is steady enough to plan around. Whether you call it a bareboat rental or self-drive boat hire, the deal is the same. You bring a recognised licence and a VHF certificate, and the yacht is yours for the week.

Why charter bareboat in Croatia

  • Your route, your clock: leave before breakfast or stay for a second coffee in Vis harbour. There is no professional aboard with an opinion about either.
  • The cheapest way to sail here: you pay for the yacht and nothing in wages, and you skip the skipper's food kitty on top of that.
  • Forgiving distances: most hops in central Dalmatia run two to three hours port to port, so a newly licensed crew is never far from shelter when the forecast changes its mind.
  • Real privacy: the anchorage you pick, the music you play and the midnight swim involve nobody outside your own crew.
  • A boat that fits your ticket: a compact monohull for a couple or a four cabin catamaran for two families, both chartered against the same licence.
Captain's insider tip: "Do your miles before lunch. The maestral fills in from the northwest after midday, force 3 to 4 on a typical summer afternoon, which is lovely sailing but also the moment every town quay from Hvar to Korฤula starts filling up. If you are tied up or anchored by four o'clock, you get the berth, the swim and the quiet glass of wine while the late arrivals circle the harbour. And glance at the forecast every morning: the bura gives notice, but only to people who look."

Where to go bareboat sailing in Croatia

  • Central Dalmatia: out of Split or Trogir, the Hvar, Vis and Korฤula circuit is the classic first Croatian week. Legs are short, berths are plentiful, and a konoba serving peka waits at the end of most of them.
  • Kornati islands: 89 bare, scattered islands in a national park, best reached from Zadar or Biograd. Carry cash for the park ticket and more water than you think you need; shops out here are scarce. Browse the Kornati fleet.
  • South Dalmatia: from Dubrovnik toward Mljet and the Elaphite islands. Greener scenery, slightly longer passages, and quieter water once the day boats turn back.
  • Istria: Pula, Rovinj and the Brijuni islands in the north, with short distances and easy harbours. See the boats across Istria.

What you need to charter a bareboat in Croatia

Croatia is strict about paperwork and consistent about enforcing it. The person named as skipper needs an internationally recognised qualification, an ICC or an equivalent national certificate, plus a VHF radio licence, and the harbour authority does ask to see both. The charter base also registers your crew list before you leave the dock, so have passport details ready for everyone aboard. Send us your licence when you book and we confirm with the operator that Croatia accepts it. If nobody in your group holds a ticket, the same boats sail with a professional at the helm on our Croatia yacht charter with skipper page.

How to book a bareboat charter in Croatia

  1. Pick your base port, week and boat. 90% of our boats can be booked instantly.
  2. Send your sailing licence and a short sailing CV so the base can approve you as skipper.
  3. Hold the dates with a low deposit.
  4. Check in at the marina on Saturday afternoon, leave the refundable security deposit or take a damage waiver, and walk through the boat with the base team.
  5. Sit through the area briefing, load your provisions and cast off.

What a bareboat charter price includes in Croatia

The price covers the yacht with its standard inventory and the boat's insurance. A refundable security deposit covers damage, or you can shrink your exposure with a damage waiver. Locally you pay fuel, marina and mooring fees along the route, the end clean, and the Kornati park ticket if you sail through it. Compare sailing yachts in Croatia against catamarans in Croatia, or start from the full Croatia charter fleet. Short on time? Our Croatia day charter page covers single day boat hire, and if this is your first time chartering without a skipper, the bareboat charter guide explains how the format works everywhere we operate.
