Through the Croatian summer the maestral fills in from the northwest around late morning and builds through the afternoon, so the sea off the open coast is usually flattest before noon. Get it the wrong way round and the return turns into two hours of slamming into short, steep waves.

Where day charters go from each port

The Croatian coast is a chain of ports with islands sitting directly offshore, so the day looks quite different depending on where you start.

  • Split and Trogir: the busiest day charter area in the country. The Blue Lagoon off the Drvenik islands is the standard half day, and Šolta, Brač and the Pakleni islands off Hvar are all reachable and back inside a day.
  • Zadar and Šibenik: the way into the Kornati islands, a national park of bare limestone islets with almost nothing built on them. From Skradin you can also run up the river towards Krka.

  4. Start back with enough daylight in hand, and refuel if the contract requires it.

Choosing a day boat

Speed counts for more on a day charter than on a week. An extra six knots turns a distant island into a realistic lunch stop, and that is why motorboats and speedboats dominate the day fleet. Shade matters nearly as much: in midsummer a bimini or a hardtop is worth more than a few extra knots. If the group is mostly there to swim and sunbathe, a catamaran gives far more deck space and sits steadier at anchor.
