You have three options for the night: a berth in a marina, a mooring buoy, or dropping anchor in a bay.
Marinas and mooring buoys
You can rent a berth in a marina or tie up to a mooring buoy off an island or town. Many marinas take reservations, so check their website and book ahead, especially in the busy season. For a last-minute berth, call the marina on the radio, ask for a free berth and announce your arrival. You need a valid radio licence to use the boat's radio.
Town harbours
In a town or city harbour, check the local rules on maximum boat length and the water depth first. Once you are moored, someone usually comes by within a few hours to collect the mooring fee for the night.
Anchoring
If you anchor for the night, choose a spot where anchoring is allowed and keep enough distance from other boats. Check the depth and read the weather forecast for the night.
With a skipper
If you hired a skipper, they book the berths for you as soon as they know the route.
Planning your route
If you book with Borrow A Boat, ask us for an itinerary for your sailing area. We send one on request.
