Can I rent a boat without a skipper license?

Updated 30 September 2026 · 1 min read

Sometimes, yes. It depends on the type of boat and where you rent it. Many boats need a skipper license, some do not, and you can always hire a professional skipper through Borrow A Boat instead.

Boats you can rent without a license

  • Houseboats in Germany: you can rent a houseboat without a license after a short training course called the "Charterschein". It takes about 3 hours and happens before check-in. The price depends on the charter company.
  • Caribbean: in many places in the Caribbean, and in a few other destinations, a sailing résumé is enough. You describe your boating experience to show that you can handle the boat.
  • Small motorboats: some small motorboats can be rented without a license and without experience. Check the rules of the rental company and the local regulations.

Hire a skipper

If you do not have the right license, or simply do not want to skipper yourself, hire a skipper. You relax, and someone who knows the boat and the area takes care of it. In the busy season skippers get booked up, so arrange one early and check availability before you book the boat. More: How do I hire a skipper or entire crew for my yacht?
