Do I need to bring my own captain/crew?

Updated 30 September 2026 · 1 min read

No, not necessarily. It depends on the type of charter you book. With Borrow A Boat you can choose between three:

  • Bareboat: you rent the boat without crew and skipper it yourself. You need the right license.
  • Skippered: a professional skipper sails the boat for you. You need no license.
  • Fully crewed: the boat comes with a crew, for example a captain, a host and a chef, and you are a guest on board.

How do I know if a boat comes with a skipper or crew?

The boat description says whether a skipper or crew is included in the price, available at extra cost, or whether you need a license to rent the boat yourself. If anything is unclear, ask us.

Do I need a license?

Only if you skipper the boat yourself. Which license you need depends on the destination and the boat: What boat license do I need? Some boats can be rented without one: Can I rent a boat without a skipper license?
